Managing the ‘Christmas excess’.

For many of us Christmas will be a little different this year, with potentially more joy packed into a week or two, than we may have had all year. If this sees you reaching for a few too many gins, brussel sprouts, baileys, champagne (delete as appropriate), here are some tips to help.

When you’ve had too much to drink (and I don't mean water).

Your liver will need support if you over do it here. Alcohol causes us to be dehydrated and goes straight into our blood stream, so support your liver by eating more of the foods that helps it. Examples are garlic, onion, artichoke / dandelion / milk thistle, B vitamins and the cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, kale and brussels (you either love them or you hate them).

If you don’t think you will get enough of these foods, this food grown total Cleanse complex by Wild Nutrition is a really nice option (not safe in pregnancy). It contains nice liver supportive herbs such as dandelion and artichoke (use the code KHorstmannNutrition to get 20% off purchases over £40.

Oh and most importantly, drink drink drink..but water this time! Drink a glass of water in between alcoholic drinks to flush the alcohol out of the body and consider substituting the odd alcoholic drink with something like an elderflower cawston press.

When you’ve had too much to eat…

Digestion starts in our mouth, in fact, even before the food reaches our mouths as enzymes in our mouth spring into action at the sheer sight and smell of our food. It is worth remembering to chew your food well and stop eating when you feel full, but if you go beyond this point and feel uncomfortable (have indigestion), there are a few things to try before reaching for the Gaviscon (it contains parahydroxybenzoates which is a paraben!).

  • Peppermint tea

  • Apple cider vinegar

  • Warm water with lemon juice

  • Swedish bitters

  • Viridian’s organic digestive elixir which contains marshmallow and peppermint will help that horrible morning after feeling, settle an upset stomach and support your liver.
